abstract: bring a dsl modem or other device for which you would like to learn how to make a custom serial and/or jtag interface cable. at this workshop there will be electronic components, bare cables, breadboards, solder, etc. so you can build your own interface cable directly for your device as well as basic know-how for figuring pin-outs and reading schematics. if you can find any documentation on interfacing with your device through serial or jtag, bring that with you as it will be quite helpful. if you have a multi-use tool or small screw driver, bring one so that you can open up your device. soldering irons will be available for borrowing or cheap purchase, multimeters will be available to borrow, but if you have either bring them as well. also helpful is a laptop with a working serial driver and serial port (or usb-to-serial interface) to test your cable(s). if you have never soldered before that's ok, but be prepared to give yourself some extra time for this workshop. i can't guarantee you will make a working cable(s) by the end of this workshop, but we sure as hack will try. if you have questions ahead of time you can reach me at: fbz at the site http://fabienne.us bio: fbz tends to take stuff apart and often doesn't bother to put it back together in the same way.
